This year during the spring and fall semester, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) is hosting a series of events to commemorate the 75th anniversary of military integration through the passage of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act of 1948 and President Harry S. Truman signing of Executive Order 9981.

Toni Pegues, MSW, LCSW will be joining the Military and Veteran Services to reflect on this monumental anniversary by sharing her personal story as a woman, veteran, and advocate. A veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Ms. Pegues currently serves as the Women Veterans Program Manager with the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs’ Salt Lake City Healthcare System.

Ms. Pegues will be discussing her experience as a Black woman in the Marine Corps and her motivations for serving in the toughest branch of the military. She will then detail her journey of transitioning out of the military and into the field of social work, eventually becoming a support for women veterans through her work with the VA.

Knowing the importance of community, Ms. Pegues moderates the virtual network Women Veterans for Women Veterans (WV2) that meets monthly, connecting women from across the country in safe and open conversations about matters that are unique to this population. In other community-building efforts, in the spring Ms. Pegues will be hitting the road across Utah and neighboring southwest states informing women veterans about the available programs and resources that can often be underutilized.
